Risk management in Banking

THE PROJECT IN BRIEF

This project requires you to compare two banks according to some of the major balance sheet risks that they take. In Part 1 of the project you will be presenting a plan for your project and then you are asked to compare the banks on the basis of:

  • Capital risk and Liquidity risk (Part 2 of the project)
  • Credit risk and Interest rate risk (Part 3 of the project)

2.2       WHICH TWO BANKS SHOULD YOU COMPARE?

The first letter of your family name (last name) determines the two major banks that you are required to compare. The specific allocations are as per the following table. Make sure that you choose the correct pair of banks to compare. If you have any questions please consult the lecturer or tutor.

First letter of your family name

Banks to be compared

A - L

Westpac  – Bank of Queensland (BOQ)

M - Z

ANZ – Bank of Queensland (BOQ)

2.3       WHERE TO SOURCE INFORMATION

Each bank has a website that contains annual report information. This information is typically contained under a heading of "shareholder information". The annual reports are downloadable in PDF format. You will make your comparisons between the two major banks on the basis of information contained in the respective 2015 Annual Reports. If the financials you are using have a consolidated (or group) column as well as a company (or bank or parent) column, then use the company / bank / parent figures.

You may find the following comments useful:

  • The main information that you require is the full financial statements for each bank. These financial statements will include all the notes relevant to the financial statements.
  • Typically each bank will include the information that you require as the second part of the full annual report.
  • If you are getting an annual report sent out to you (some banks will do this), make sure that it is not an abridged version. This abridged form (sometimes called an ‘annual review’ is of little use as it does not contain the full financial statements.
  • Most of the annual reports are well over 100 pages long so that you may need to be selective in the information that you print. In fact, the length of these reports is one argument for getting a copy posted out from the bank rather than printing it off.

In addition, you should look to access any other information that is available. Some of this information may be on the bank’s website or in the form of broker's reports available on the web. The KPMG site (http://www.kpmg.com.au/default.aspx?tabid=446 then search on “major bank results”) is another source of information (for major banks only). Other information may be accessed through library searches.

  • STRUCTURE OF THE PROJECT

It is suggested that you use a heading structure in your project rather than a formal essay style. Where possible, organize your data into tables or graphs. Always quote the source of any information contained in a table. Each part of your project should be fully referenced. Attachment 1 at the end of this project provides information on correct referencing.
